The Great Jodini

Jodini's magic show captures children's imagination and sweeps them up on a whirlwind tour of our wonderful planet with puppets and magic in this interacitve program.

Jodini's Wonderful World of Magic presents a 40 minute fast-paced, magic performance where youngsters learn about the fascinating countries and cultures on our planet. Jodini reaches into her bag of tricks to take children on a fun filled tour of Africa, Australia, India, Italy and other countries.  Her show is filled with magic, music, live animals and lots of audience participation.  Grab your passport and be prepared to be amazed! 

2011-2012 Voluntary Pre-K Enrollment

To enroll in the VPK program visit the Early Learning Coalition Office Monday-Friday 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. or attend a VPK round-up event at your library.

VPK programs offer free childcare to 4-year-old children throughout the State of Florida. Each program must provide developmentally appropriate instruction with activities to help your child get ready for Kindergarten. VPK programs can be found in a variety of settings including the Alachua County Schools, private childcare centers, faith-based providers and home childcare providers who have been approved as VPK providers through the State. Click here for a list of VPK providers for the 2011-2012 school year. Some providers will also have a summer 2011 VPK program, registration for summer is going on at the ELCAC office throughout March. 

Friends Spring 2011 Book Sale

The Friends of the Library book sale continues through Wednesday, April 20, at 430 North Main Street, Gainesville

The Friends of the Library, serving the Alachua County Library District, will hold its annual spring book sale from Saturday, April 16, to Wednesday, April 20, 2011.

To all Citizens,

The Alachua County Legislative Delegation will be holding a hearing on Monday, January 31st from 10 a.m. – 12 noon at The Thomas Center in Gainesville.  The purpose of this hearing is to discuss and take public testimony on whether to file legislation that seeks to create a commission to determine the merits of having a citizen referendum to merge the Gainesville Police Department and the Alachua County Sheriff’s Office.

Micanopy Library reopens January 18th

See a few photos of the Micanopy branch metamorphosis.

It is true; the Micanopy Library will be reopening on Tuesday, January 18th.  You will notice some fairly significant changes in the library including a new layout, more computers, laptop stations, and most noticeably a new paint color!  While there have been a lot of changes to the building you will also notice that we're not quite done with the finishing touches.  The Library District wanted to ensure that patrons were not deprived of the use of the facility while we were waiting on some of the new furniture items to arrive, so please pardon our dust as we continue to make improvements over the next few weeks.

The Alachua County Library District Governing Board encourages all interested citizens to apply for three vacancies, effective March 31, 2011, on the Alachua County Library District Board of Trustees. Applications must be signed and mailed or delivered to Headquarters Library Administration by 5:00 pm, Friday, January 14, 2011.

The Library Board of Trustees is a citizen volunteer board which is part of the Library District governing structure. The seven citizens who serve as Board of Trustees members are appointed by the Governing Board. The Board of Trustees is made up of three Alachua County representatives, three City of Gainesville representatives and one Alachua County League of Cities representative.

Billington named 25 motion pictures this week—Hollywood classics, documentaries and innovative shorts reflecting genres from every era of American filmmaking—to the National Film Registry of the Library of Congress.

October 1 has been declared the Follow a Library on Twitter day. Libraries worldwide are participating, and Alachua County Library District is no exception.

Its 2010 recognition marks the first win for Alachua County in the competition.

To help spread awareness of the long-term repercussions of the forces affecting the future of books and the public’s access to them, this speaker series approaches the subject of libraries, print culture, and digitization from a variety of historical, geographical, and disciplinary perspectives.
