What are the only flying mammals whose names conjure up notions of romance and mystery? Bats, of course! All you have to do is mention bats and visions of blood-sucking vampires come to mind, but don’t worry, there will be no vampire bats at the Library! The Lubee Bat Conservancy program, “Bats Alive”, is all about fruit bats.
Did you know that bats make up one-fifth of all mammals? The importance of these creatures to their native ecosystems cannot be underestimated. Bats help distribute seeds, pollinate native flowering plants and help control insect populations globally. Despite this, bats are among the most endangered species on the planet. This is one of the reasons why we need to understand and protect the species. Another reason is that they are truly beautiful animals that deserve attention. So come to Library Headquarters, Wednesday, June 20 at 11:00 am, Meeting Room A, to meet a couple of real live bats and find out more about these wondrous animals!
