Chinese New Year

Chinese New Year is the most elaborate celebration of the year in China and in Chinese communities around the world. It lasts for about 10 days and is a time for family, food, fun and fireworks!

This is the year of the Dragon and one important event that you see every year in a Chinese New Year Parades is a dragon dance. A long ferocious dragon dances through the streets and people make a lot of noise and bang on noisy instruments to chase the evil spirits away.

Join us at the library on Tuesday, January 24 @ 10:30 AM for a preschool program with a Chinese New Year theme. Tuesday afternoon at 4:00 PM you can join us for a Chinese New Year craft making events. We will make dragon puppets and other fun items to take home.

On Thursday, January 26 @ 6:30 PM, join us for an evening with Chinese American author and graphic novelist, Gene Luen Yang, author of the award winning young adult novel, American Born Chinese.

Other events in the community to celebrate Asian culture and the Year of the Dragon include the Ahn Trio with the Nai-Ni Chen Dancers on February 9 at the Phillips Center or Performing Arts and the grand opening of the Cofrin Asian Art Wing on March 31, 2012 at the Harn Museum in the University of Florida Cultural Plaza.

We have books and DVDs about Chinese New Year if you want to learn more.
