Let's honor all our grandparents, step-grandparents, adopted grandparents, and anyone we love like a grandparent: bring them to the Hawthorne Library to celebrate Grandparents Day!

Together we'll have fun with games, photos, and crafting bookmark keepsakes featuring you and your grandperson! You can each take one home to remember the day. Supplies are provided.

Mrs. Marian McQuade of Oak Hill, West Virginia created Grandparents Day to express her esteem and conscern for the elderly. She started out by organizing "Past 80 Parties" which required her to contact nursing homes where she noticed a trend of chronic loneliness for many residents. Mrs. McQuade is quoted as saying "They load these people up with gifts at Christmas, but they leave them alone the other 364 days of the year. I wanted there to be another day to visit."   Thanks to Mrs. McQuade's efforts, President Jimmy Carter signed National Grandparents Day into law in September 1978. Follow this link to the official Grandparents Day Website for more information.  Three powerful reasons to celebrate this holiday are listed by the LegacyProject.org:

  1. To honor grandparents.
  2. To give grandparents an opportunity to show love for their children's children.
  3. To help children become aware of the strength, information and guidance older people can offer.
