Friends of the Library (FOL) gears up for another Fall book sale
GAINESVILLE, FL - Largest Book Sale of its kind in Florida - More than 500,000 books, records, games, CDs, DVDs, audio, video, paintings, posters, prints, puzzles and magazines have been donated for the sale! Most prices range from $0.25 to $4.00.
October 23 - 27
Saturday, Oct 23: 9am - 6pm
Sunday, Oct 24: 1pm-6pm
Monday, Oct 25: Noon -8pm
Tuesday, Oct 26: Noon-8pm (1/2 price day)
Wednesday, Oct 27: Noon-6pm (10 cent day)
All profits are used for the Alachua County Library District and for community literacy projects.
Before arriving at the sale be sure to remember these tips:
• Bring your own boxes, bags, and friends to carry your items.
• FOL only accepts payments by cash or check -- no credit or debit cards.
• Customers may not hold a place in line unless they are physically present.
• Electronic devices for scanning purposes are not allowed
• Leave your wagons, food, drinks, smoke, and pets at home
• Leave your strollers, carts, and rolling suitcases at home on Saturday and Sunday
• The Large Order Tent is available for orders of five or more boxes per person; special rules apply. Check the website for additional details www.folacld.org.

The FOL building houses a great many books and welcomes volunteers of all ages! Friends of the Library accepts donations year-round and has many volunteers who sort, price, and arrange these books for the semi-annual book sales which are open to the public. Donations of printed material, art work, CDs, audio tapes, video tapes, records, and computer software are accepted at the Book House during regular hours. Two drop boxes are located outside of the Book House for after-hours donations.
Hours for donations are:
Monday - Thursday: 9:00 AM - 3:00 PM,
Friday and Saturday 9:00 AM – Noon
FOL also accepts monetary donations and memorial gifts on behalf of the Library District. Gift memberships are available to remember someone's birthday, anniversary, or other special occasion. The money made during the book sales is used for budgeted library support, scholarships for library staff, special projects, and county literacy projects. In 2008-2009 the Friends of the Library provided $144,000 in support of Alachua County Library District for Adult and Children’s programming, library materials, and other library needs.
FOL offers local mini-grants to project that fulfill a "cultural" objective; that is, it must in some way enrich the cultural life of the community. First preference will be given to proposals dealing with one or more of the following categories:
- Literacy
- Books, media
- Literary events and stories, literature
- Reading related matters including educational programs
- Language, including dramatic presentations and oral history
Some of the projects funded in 2008-2009 include the Family Literacy Festival , Books for Soldiers by providing library materials to members of deployed forces, A gift to Katherine’s Tree, the Library Foundation’s book endowment fund, “Snuggle Up and Read”, support for distribution of books to all Head Start students and toward the costs of the Snuggle Up and Read Center at the Headquarters Library.
