During April’s Alachua County Library District Governing Board meeting, County Commissioner Paula DeLaney was elected Chair of the Governing Board and School Board of Alachua County member Barbara Sharpe was elected Vice Chair of the Governing Board. As the newly elected Chair, Governor DeLaney recognized outgoing Chair Scherwin Henry for his service on the Governing Board and proclaimed April Library Appreciation Month.
Governor Henry was appointed to the ACLD Governing Board (City of Gainesville seat) in May 2009. He served as Vice Chair of the Board of Governors from May 2010 through May 2011 and then as Chair from May 2011 through March 2012. During a special presentation, Governor DeLaney recognized the Library District's many accomplishments during Governor Henry’s tenure, presented him with a plaque, and thanked him for his service.
"Governor Henry we present you with this plaque in sincere appreciation of your service to the citizens of Alachua County as a member of the Alachua County Library District Governing Board," Governor DeLaney said. "Thank you Governor Henry, your presence on the Board of Governors will be missed."
Governor Henry expressed his appreciation for the opportunity to serve on the Governing Board. He recognized the contributions that the Library District staff, fellow Board members and the community have made to the Alachua County Library District. He congratulated the Library District for receiving the 2011 National Medal from the Institute of Museum and Library Services for being one of the top ten libraries and museums in the country.
Additionally, Governor DeLaney declared "April 2012 Library Appreciation Month" in the Alachua County Library District and read the proclamation.
It was also noted that Florida Governor Rick Scott had declared April 2012 Library Appreciation Month throughout the State of Florida. This is the thirteenth year the Florida Library Association has coordinated this event.
