An Evening with Henry David Thoreau (Non-Event) Gala
The Alachua County Library District (ACLD) Foundation celebrates the 200th birthday of Henry David Thoreau, hosting the noted philosopher at the 2017 (Non-Event) Gala.
The menu will not include the great man’s own dishes:
Bread: “I cannot resist joining you. My brown bread, sweetened with molasses and raisins, will soon be gone.”
Rodents: “I could sometimes eat a fried rat with a good relish, if it were necessary.”
Strawberries: “I have been inspired through the palate, that some berries which I had eaten on a hillside had fed my genius.”
Rhubarb shrub: “The rhubarb had crystallized, covering the bottom of the bowl with perfect cubes.”
Special sauce: “But put an extra condiment into your dish, and it will poison you.”
Gala Committee Chair Mitzi Austin said, “In 2016 the campaign raised over $15,000 for the Endowment.” By hosting a “Non-Event” Gala, all of the funds raised go directly into the Foundation Endowment fund to be used for library enhancements such as The Snuggle Up centers and Teen Spaces in the Headquarters and branch libraries.
The ACLD Foundation’s Endowment fund will continue to supply library enhancements, believing, as Thoreau said, that “Books are the treasured wealth of the world and the fit inheritance of generations and nations.”
