On March 11, Alachua County Library District (ACLD) Foundation recognized Erin Phemester as the 11th recipient of the annual Guy Hudspeth Award presented to an Alachua County Library District (ACLD) employee as well as eight other honorees during its annual Katherine’s Tree Award Ceremony at Headquarters Library, 401 E. University Avenue. In honor of Phemester’s service to the Library District, a leaf was placed on Katherine’s Tree, an etched-glass rendition of the Tree of Knowledge in an impressive10-foot tall oak frame.

Phemester is the Senior Library Manager of the Youth Services Department. During her five years with the Library District she has worked toward making library services available to all Alachua County youth. Of particular note is her work with the Summer Reading Program. Last year participation increased by 10% over the previous year with more adults taking part as well.

Other honorees who received leaves on Katherine’s Tree included Tom and Mary Evans and Bill Watson sponsored by the Friends of the Library (FOL) for their outstanding volunteer work with FOL book sales. Dr. Heather Harrell gave a leaf in memory of her grandmother, Martha Whitehead, and Bill Watson did also in memory of his mother Georgia B. Watson. Ken Wagener received a leaf in honor of his 71st birthday, and Rob and Carol Ann Oglesby had a leaf placed on the tree to reflect their support of the library.

The Guy Hudspeth Award, sponsored for the past 11 years by the Kosman Foundation, was named for Guy Hudspeth, former Library Manager at Archer Branch and the first award recipient in 2007. Annually, this award does double duty by honoring an outstanding employee in the Library District, and the award monies donated by the Kosman Foundation support ACLD Foundation’s mission to provide supplemental funding to the Library District. ACLD Foundation, through its awards, has funded Snuggle Up Centers for children and families and Teen areas at Headquarters Library and other branches as they have been renovated and expanded in recent years.
