How to make a mermaid bath bomb:
- 1 cup baking soda
- 1/2 cup citric acid
- 1/2 cup Epsom salt
- 1/2 cup cornstarch
- 2 1/2 tbsp. almond oil
- 3/4 tbsp. water
- 2 tsp. essential oils
- Optional: food coloring
- Several mixing bowls
- Measuring cups
- Measuring spoons
- Whisk or large spoon for mixing
- Tablecloth (it'll be messy)
- Comfortable clothes (you might get messy)
- Gloves (no really it can get messy)
- Optional: seashell molds
Quantity: depending on your molds you can get up to 4 bath bombs per batch.
Step 1: Mixing. Whisk the dry ingredients together in a large mixing bowl. In a separate small bowl, mix the wet ingredients together. When using essential oils it's best to use 1 or 2. Anything more can get overwhelming very quickly. Slowly, as in small portions at a time, mix the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients. If you're not afraid to get messy you can use your hands to mix at this point. The reason you need to do this step slowly is because it will react and frizz if you're not careful. Mix until it feels like wet sand.
Step 2: Color (optional). Put on some gloves to protect your hands from staining. Separate the mixture into small bowls and add a few drops of food coloring to make different colors. One bowl can be blue, another purple, any color you enjoy. However, if you have an allergy to food dye you can skip this step!
Step 3: Assembling. Layer your mixture in whatever molds you will be using and press firmly to pack in the mixture. So if you're using food coloring you can have one layer blue, the next purple, and so on. There are lots of options for molds. It can be seashell shaped. It can be egged shaped. Plastic or metal. You can even use an ice cube tray. The mold is to help shape your bath bomb. You will need to gently tap out the bath bomb free from the mold so as to air dry for 24 to 72 hours.
