Pine cones, of course, come from pine trees. Pine trees belong to a group of plants known as gymnosperms. They date back to prehistoric times. Gymnosperm, which means "naked seed" is a plant that has seeds unprotected by an ovary or fruit. Pines trees produce male and female cones, but the woody cones we are most familiar with are the female cones.
