I know, I know, I'm a little late to the party, but I finally had the opportunity to read Educated by Tara Westover, and I was completely blown away. I had it in mind for my Teen Book Club, and after finishing it, realized there are many more lessons in there than I had anticipated. Tara has to overcome mental control by her parents and an overbearing, abusive father and brother, along with MANY other obstacles to receive her education. Teens can benefit from her story by learning to have empathy for others who do not come from a similar background, and also that their education is something to be valued and appreciated, because not everyone is given an equal opportunity to learn. Think high school Algebra is hard? Imagine having to learn Trigonometry all by yourself from a textbook with zero formal schooling. Imagine going to college having only ever read the Bible, the Book of Mormon, and an old encyclopedia. Imagine having to ask on your first day at university what the word "Holocaust" means. After reading this amazing novel, I was left with many questions, and pondering the way some Americans are completely overlooked and abandoned by their society. I cannot recommend this book enough for all readers of all ages! Though there were moments when I had to set it down and catch my breath.
