Celebrate 75th anniversary of Cross Creek and Cross Creek Cookery by Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings

Starting January 24, the Alachua County Library District and Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings Historic State Park will present The Year of Cross Creek: Celebrating the 75th anniversary of the publication of Cross Creek and Cross Creek Cookery, by local Pulitzer Prize winning author Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings. A series of programs highlighting this local author’s famous books about stories of friendships, a big trial, tasty recipes using food from her farmyard and other tales about life at the Creek include:

The Year of Cross Creek: Cross Creek Cookery and Stories
Valerie Rivers, Park Manager at the Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings Historic State Park, will share stories, recipes and marmalade samples from Cross Creek’s famous author Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings. Learn about the foods that were part of Florida cuisine and her citrus grove, farmyard and garden.

Hawthorne Book Club – A Year of Cross Creek: A Guided Conversation
James Stephens, author of Cross Creek Reader’s Guide, will talk about and lead this book club discussion of Cross Creek by Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings. The public is welcome to join the group.

The Year of Cross Creek: Life Stories from Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings
Local Pulitzer Prize winning author Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings wrote about the changes between black and white Americans during the first half of the 20th century. Join this discussion through the author’s eyes and those of her “Perfect Maid” Idella Parker. Valerie Rivers, Park Manager at the Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings Historic State Park, will share passages from both Parker’s books and Rawlings’ letters, notes and books.

The Year of Cross Creek: Talking about Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings’ Life and Writings
Valerie Rivers, Park Manager at the Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings Historic State Park, will lead a discussion about Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings’ writings. Learn more about her experiences and attitudes about life as an artist, an individual and a woman in the first half of the 20th century. Come share, both serious and funny, the stories of friendships, a big trial and other tales that illustrate the interwoven connections between a personal life, art and the history of American women.

The Year of Cross Creek: The Secret River
Valerie Rivers, Park Manager at the Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings Historic State Park, will read The Secret River, an absorbing story about an adventurous young girl trying to help her community during difficult times. She will talk about this children’s fantasy book by Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings and about the life of this Pulitzer Prize winning author. These programs are for children ages 5 to 11.
