Celebrate National Friends of the Libraries Week: October 15-21, 2017

September 28, 2017

Alachua County Library District celebrates its Friends of the Library during National Friends of the Libraries Week: October 15-21, 2017. The Library District thanks its Friends of the Library, an all-volunteer organization, for 63 years of service and its significant contributions to our libraries and community.

Since 1986, when the Library District became an independent special taxing district, the Friends have donated more than $4.7 million to the Library District. These funds help provide additional adult and children’s programming, enrich and expand the materials collection, fund educational scholarships for library staff, purchase books for the Snuggle Up and Read Program with area Head Start children, provide materials and training for adult reading tutors, support library expansion projects and much more.

Thanks to the Friends’ generous support in 2017 the Library District engaged 3,557 kids, 793 teens and 1,497 adults in Summer Reading. More than 33,054 people participated in a variety of summer programs including: Wizzbangz Bus, Tampa Taiko drummers, Asian Dance with Surapsari, Professor Dodad’s Lab, Jongleur Jugglers, Magic Mike, Capoeira of Gainesville and so much more.

Many residents support their libraries and the Friends by shopping at the Friends of the Library Book Sales and/or donating books and other items to the sale. The fall sale is October 21-25, at the BookHouse, 430-B N. Main Street. The fall and spring book sales are a major source of funding for library programs and services. Learn more about the Friends of the Library at www.folacld.org.

The Alachua, High Springs and Micanopy Branches also have Friends of the Library organizations actively involved with their libraries. These groups have also enhanced library services in their communities.
