Alachua County Library District (ACLD) presents its second annual Fandomonium: A Comic Con Event on Saturday, April 9, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Headquarters Library located at 401 E. University Avenue. Fans of comics, anime and sci-fi pop culture are invited to enjoy this free comic convention for all ages that includes three keynote speakers, panel discussions, a comic drawing workshop, a costume and fan art contest, movies, crafts and activities plus vendors and food trucks.
The first keynote speaker is local, award winning author Meredith Ann Pierce. She is the author of The Darkangel Trilogy and The Firebringer Trilogy. At 11:30 a.m., Pierce will offer insight about the process of writing, world building and creating characters.
Comic illustrators and authors Amanda Conner and Jimmy Palmiotti will talk about their work and their love of comics at 1 p.m. Amanda Conner is a well-known illustrator who has worked on a wide range of projects. She has worked for Marvel’s X-Men titles, Excalibur and Unlimited. For several years, she served as penciller for Harris Comics hit, Vampirella. She has worked on many titles for DC Comics and the DC Vertigo line. Conner and her husband Jimmy Palmiotti, along with Justin Gray, formed PaperFilms, a multi-media entertainment studio. She continues to produce cover work for Marvel and DC, including the Before Watchmen: Silk Spectre series, while working on independent projects.
Jimmy Palmiotti is a multi-award winning comic book creator. The long list of comics and characters that he created includes The New West, The Monolith, 21 Down, Beautiful Killer, Weapon of God, Painkiller Jane and more. He has also been a writer for the Marvel Comics series Deadpool, which is now a major motion picture. This dynamic duo recently worked on the highly anticipated Harley Quinn Volume 4: A Call to Arms, due out in June.
