Lily Williams’s debut children’s book, If sharks disappeared, follows a young girl and her dog as they learn about the importance of sharks. This book shows how all life on Earth is connected and the dangers that could occur if there weren’t enough sharks in the oceans. Overfishing sharks could set off a chain reaction that would make the oceans into a dead zone and may even spread to land (and us!) While these dangers are real and scary, Williams’s simple, colorful illustrations and hopeful tone make this an excellent primer for the youngest conservationists. The endpages include a glossary of scientific terms and a guide to what children can do to help sharks.
