The Legend of Rock Paper Scissors by Drew Daywalt

Long ago, in an ancient and distant realm called the Kingdom of Backyard, there lived a warrior called Rock. Thus begins one of my favorite new books to read aloud.

As a fan of The Day the Crayons Quit, I was looking forward to another Drew Daywalt book.  He does not disappoint with The Legend of Rock Paper Scissors. This hilarious picture book gives us a background story on how the popular kids game, Rock Paper Scissors, came to be.  Rock, Paper, and Scissors are great warriors, looking for a challenge throughout their respective realms. Undefeated and unable to find worthy opponents, our heroes are bored.  When they encounter each other in the great cavern of Two-Car Garage, an epic battle ensues. This book is great for reading aloud. The illustrations by Adam Rex are a perfect complement to Daywalt’s very funny prose and together, they delight both children and adults.
