The Proudest Blue: A Story of Hijab and Family by Ibtihaj Muhammad

In 2016 Ibtihaj Muhammad became the first Hijab-wearing Muslim to represent the USA at an Olympic Games and she came home with a bronze medal in fencing! Now, Ibtihaj is using her platform to offer comfort and inspiration to  children through stories.

The Proudest Blue is a lovely tale about a young girl picking out a hijab to wear to school for the first time. Told through the eyes of her younger sister, the story is full of beautiful family bonds but also shows the challenges of being a child who chooses to be different at school. As Asiya makes her way through her first day of school wearing a Hijab, little sister, Faizah notices the strange looks, the questions, and the bullies but, she also notices her sister's pride and resilience in the face of adversity. Faizah decides that she can't wait to wear her first Hijab as well.

The Proudest Blue is a gentle introduction to wearing Hijab for anyone interested in the subject and many Muslim girls will no-doubt delight in seeing themselves and their culture beautifully and respectfully dipicted in Hatem Aly's gorgeous illustrations.
