“Early one morning, a mouse met a wolf, and he was quickly gobbled up.” So begins The Wolf, the Duck, & the Mouse, the newest picture book by Mac Barnett & Jon Klassen. This isn’t quite the end of the mouse, though. The mouse’s cries of woe awaken the current resident of the wolf’s stomach, the duck, who’s grown to enjoy the peace and plenitude of living in a wolf’s belly. When the duck and the mouse throw a dance party, they give the wolf a stomachache. A hunter, alerted by the wolf’s moans of pain, attacks and the duck and the mouse must fight for their home and way of life.
