Circle of Shadows by Evelyn Skye

Sora is a Taigas, a person marked by the gods to be trained in magic and the fighting arts to protect the kingdom of Kichona. At least she will be when she completes her final exams. Unfortunately for her, and the kingdom of Kichona, something is coming. Something new but old, a new form of magic but one that has been around forever.

I really liked this book, but be warned, it is a little bit of a cliffhanger and the next Circle of Shadowsbook doesn't come out until next February. In stories like Harry Potter the main characters fight mostly with their magic and less so with their fists. However, here we see soldiers who fight with their fist and only use their magic to enhance their own abilities. They can use magic to give them better vision to see an enemy coming from far away, or to climb up the side of a building, etc. I found that to be very interesting and unique. I think this would be a good readalike for anyone who likes the His Dark Materials series by Phillip Pullman. This is a good fantasy, action, book with some unique twists that an avid reader like myself found refreshing.
