What began as Negro History Week in 1926 officially became Black History Month in 1976 when U.S. president Gerald Ford extended the recognition to “honor the too-often neglected accomplishments of Black Americans in every area of endeavor throughout our history.” Black History Month has been celebrated in the United States every February since. Created to focus attention on the contributions of African Americans to the United States, Black History Month honors all Black people from all periods of U.S. history - from the enslaved people first brought over from Africa in the early 17th century to African Americans living in the United States today. Below we have shared some great titles in our collection for children and families to explore and learn about Black history in America.

barack bio book cover image
Barack by Jonah Winter

A glowing picture book biography of the 44th President of the United States, Barack Obama. This is a journey that began in many places. It began in Kansas, home of Barack's mother. It began in Africa, home of Barack's father. It began in Hawaii one moonlit night, the night that Barack was born. Sometimes it was a lonely journey. Sometimes it was an enchanted journey. But throughout, this boy often wondered: Who am I? Where do I belong? This book does a great job of introducing children to biographies and telling Barack Obama's story of working to make a change in the world.
