A Day with Daniel Bernstrom!

Discover the joy of great storytelling and the process that goes into writing your own story.

Join masterful storyteller Daniel Bernstrom as he shares his love of picture books and his desire to spark happiness in others.  He will talk about his book, One Day in the Eucalyptus, Eucalyptus Tree on Tuesday, February 27 at 10:00am at Millhopper Branch and at 6:30pm at Headquarters Library.

“I never set out to be a good writer. And I will never claim that I am a good writer. I just know what makes me happy. So I write day in and day out with the hopes that what makes me happy will also spark happiness somewhere… in someone. Isn’t that a happy thought?”

Dan’s “80/20 Rule” of Writing is “80% Heart + 20% Discipline = Success”

Daniel currently works as the Learning Resource Center Coordinator at Minnesota State College — Southeast, where he teaches writing, and tutors students in math, writing, and science. He received his MFA (Master of Fine Arts) in Writing for Children and Young Adults from Hamline University. While attending Hamline, he studied under great writers such as national book honor winner E. Lockhart, picture book great Phyllis Root, Caldecott Award Winner Jacqueline Briggs Martin, and Minnesota Book Award Winner Jane Resh Thomas. He lives in Red Wing, Minnesota with his wife Heather, daughter LaVonne, and sons Grace and Haven.

“Hi, I’m Dan,

Just a little bit about me. I’m a storyteller, you see. I’m an addicted writer, which means that I can’t stop writing. Maybe it’s because I love writing a lot. I’m also the author of ‘One Day in the Eucalyptus, Eucalyptus Tree’ (Harper Collins) and ‘Gator Gator Gator’ (Harper Collins). Maybe I have a thing for repeating words. They just sound yummy to me, like chocolate, chocolate chip cookies!

I write picture books, early readers, and books for middle grade readers. This is my personal blog. It is focused on writing for kids. My mission is to encourage fellow storytellers to write stories from their heart. So you can expect to find articles on:

  • personal reflections / “This Morning”
  • resourceful videos on storytelling
  • resource LABS on the Writing Craft

I typically post once a week, every Wednesday. Sometimes I write more, sometimes less. But that’s just because I’m probably working on a book… or not working on a book. Now you know a little about me. I hope you look around Lilly Labs and find something that changes your writing life.”
