Groundhog Day on Groundhog Day

What are you doing on Groundhog Day? You could come to Library Headquarters and watch Groundhog Day. Over and over and over! We are showing Groundhog Day, starring Bill Murray and Andie MacDowell, on Tuesday, February 2 starting at 9:30am until closing time at 9:00pm. Hopefully, by the last viewing we will have figured it all out and will finally be able to move on to February 3.

Although it is thought to have its origins in ancient European weather lore, the earliest documented celebration of Groundhog Day in the United States occurred in 1841. It began as a Pennsylvania German tradition and is still celebrated in several locations around the state of Pennsylvania. The largest Groundhog Day celebration in the U.S. is in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania.

What exactly is the groundhog predicting? If the groundhog comes out of its burrow and sees its shadow, it heads back inside to sleep for another six weeks while awaiting spring. If the groundhog pops out and it is a cloudy day, then spring will come early.

How does Groundhog Day tie into the film, Groundhog Day? Come watch the movie and find out!
