Hip Hop Chess at Library Partnership

Chess pieces

Every third Friday of the month at Library Partnership, we combine hip hop and chess into an interactive and fun learning experience for afterschool kids. Chess is a classic game that teaches life skills through patience, critical thinking, and forward planning; hip hop is a universal art form that promotes creativity and expression through poetry over a beat. When you're in the middle of a chess game, the pressure is on to think ahead and analyze all available moves, attacks, and counter-attacks. When you're on the mic, you have to think quickly about your words, analyze your audience, and express your lyrics in an impactful manner. Hip hop and chess share similar cultural traits and intellectual development capabilities, as well as a universal awareness that can bring the body and mind into one.

Join us for our next meeting on April 20th at 3:30 PM - we will play chess and listen to hip hop instrumentals, and then towards the end of the meeting we will open up the mic for anybody who wishes to freestyle, recite their favorite song, or present their own lyrics.

All skill levels and ages welcome.
