Micanopy Reads Funny Picture Books

Hello and welcome to the Micanopy Reads Blog!

Once a week we’ll pull a subject from a bucket and share our favorite books, DVDs, CDs, and audiobooks that fit the description. We have all the usual lists (Favorite Mystery, Favorite Cookbook) as well as some slightly wacky topics (Books that made us scream, and not in a good way).

This week’s subject was chosen by P. Thank you, P!

Funniest Picture Books

Lena’s favorite funny picture book is Let’s Sing a Lullaby with the Brave Cowboy by Jan Thomas

It is a dark, dark night and Brave Cowboy is trying to help his cow friends go to sleep by singing them a lullaby. But there are a lot of things that scare the Brave Cowboy in the dark.  Every time cowboy tries to finish his lullaby something scares him… “Eeeeek!” Is it a snake, a spider, a wolf? This story is hilarious and so much fun to read.

Naomi’s favorite funny picture book is The Legend of Rock Paper Scissors by Drew Daywalt

Three brave warriors embark on a journey to find a worthy challenger. Strong Rock, intelligent Paper, and speedy Scissors are undefeated until they cross one another’s path one fatal day. Read this book once or twice to yourself, then go all in with the voices and you’ll have any kid listening falling over with laughter.

Kim’s favorite funny picture book is Interrupting Chicken and the Elephant of Surprise by David Ezra Stein

This book is fun because Chicken has determination and imagination, and doesn’t let facts get in the way of having fun with a homework assignment.  If you like Chicken’s antics, go check out his first book, Interrupting Chicken, where Chicken has fun with bedtime stories.

Finn’s favorite funny picture book is Nuts in Space by Elys Dolan

This book made Finn laugh out loud when they found it. We had a blast when Finn read it dramatically, cartoony voices included, to our staff one afternoon. Nuts in Space is a delightfully goofy space story about a crew of critters racing to get the Lost Nuts of Legend home before Christmas. With fun references to classic stories like Star Wars and Star Trek, it’s a book the whole family can enjoy and share a laugh over.
