Ibi Zoboi writes wonderful YA novels about the experiences of minority Americans that humanise and defy stereotypes. When I saw My Life as an Ice Cream Sandwich, I wanted to see if she had done it again for a slightly younger audience. After being struck by the unusual title, I was very excited to see the story was about a young Black girl who loves science fiction and dreams of being an astronaut. She is obsessed with Star Trek and absolutely idolizes her grandfather, who is a NASA engineer. I loved watching her learn to make new friends while still staying true to herself. I definitely would recommend this book for 5-8 graders.
