Check out the titles selected by educators and librarians throughout the state of Florida, in conjunction with FAME and the Florida Department of Education for 2018, beginning with the newest reading award program: the Sunshine State Young Readers Award Jr. (SSYRA Jr)!
The mission of the SSYRA Jr. program is to develop student interest in reading for pleasure by exposing them to a wide range of appropriate literature. Sunshine State Jr. books are selected for their wide appeal, literary value, varied genres, curriculum connections, and/or multicultural representation. Students are encouraged to listen to these books read to them, read them in a small group setting, or read independently to develop skills in fluency and comprehension.
The next group of titles are suggested for 3rd through 5th graders. The purpose of the SSYRA Program is to encourage students to read independently for pleasure and to read books that are on, above, and below their reading level in order to improve their reading fluency.
The next group of titles are suggested for grades 6-8. For more information on SSYRA, FAME, and the book selections, visit https://www.floridamediaed.org/ssyra.html.
The last group of books are the Florida Teens Read titles. The Florida Teens Read program is a student- choice reading award program to determine which YA book wins the annual award as the favorite of teens in Florida. The reading list is comprised of fifteen titles that have been chosen by a committee of twelve school librarians specifically to engage high school students (grades 9 through 12) in reading and reflect their interests as well as represent a variety of genres, formats, reading levels, viewpoints, and ethnic and cultural perspectives.
