Craft pet toys from reusable goods with MAKERspace team

cat and dog

The end of National Pet Month may be just around the corner but each Sunday, a member from the MAKERspace team will be in the Teen Room at Headquarters Branch from 1-4 p.m. sewing and constructing some great pet toys. The favorite so far has been the emptyplastic water bottle toy water bottle in a sock or sewn tube. Cats and dogs love to make them crinkle and it’s a fun way to recycle those water bottles.  There are patterns available and free materials to use. Three sizes of dog bandanas are ready for you to make a new doggy fashion accessory. And what cat wouldn’t love a new catnip toy to bat around.

You may take your toy home or donate to our partners at the Humane Society of North Central Florida.  The Humane Society of North Central Florida is our community's leading resource for pets and pet owners. Their mission is to eliminate the needless euthanasia of healthy, treatable pets in North Central Florida. Formerly the Alachua County Humane Society, Gainesville Pet Rescue and Helping Hands Pet Rescue, they joined forces in 2018 to streamline their services for the pets and the people who love them.

Another pet-related program will be making reusable bags from cleaned pet food bags. catnip toy diyYes, pet food bags, those sturdy, well-made bags for pet food. They make really nice reusable bags.  The MAKERspace Team will be making those each Sunday from 1-4 p.m. in the Teen Room.  We do have bags of various sizes but bring your own if you like.  They will come in handy for all the summer reading books. Come make a bag and see the other Stitch and Chat projects going on.
