Congratulations! You have been accepted to the Millhopper School of Withcraft and Wizardry and your wizarding training starts...real soon.
Join the staff of the Millhopper School of Witchraft and Wizardry (MSWW) on Friday, July 31 at 2 p.m. for a Facebook Live event to kick off Year 4 of MSWW. We will have Harry Potter trivia, a craft, and information about the fun we have planned for this coming year.
So, what is the Millhopper School of Witchcraft and Wizardry you ask? Well, it is 8 months of Harry Potter themed programming here at the Millhopper Branch. We know that some things will be a bit different for Year 4, but even Harry Potter had to give up Quidditch in his fourth year (oops...I hope that doesn't spoil too much for anyone).
In the past, it all began with a trip to Diagon Alley for some essential magic school gear, followed by the Sorting Ceremony. The Sorting Hat magically determined where you belong. Are you brave like a Gryffindor, loyal like a Hufflepuff, wise like a Ravenclaw, or cunning like a Slytherin? In the words of Professor McGonagall, "Your house will be something like your family...your triumphs will earn your house points...At the end of the year, the house with the most points is awarded the house cup, a great honor."
So, what are those "triumphs" that will earn you house points you ask? You earn points by participating in programs! In years past, and at some point in the future, you would earn points by attending programs at Millhopper (and any library branch location in Alachua County). House points are also earned by participating in our virtual MSWW Google Classroom, and this is how Year 4 will begin.
The current plan is to begin Year 4 virtually. There may be a time when we can offer in-person programming, but it won't be right away.
To participate, you must register. This is the only way to gain access to the MSWW Google Classroom where you will find all of our beginning of the year program offerings. Registration will begin on July 31. It will be online this year and you can access the form here: www.aclib.us/msww.
Past Program Highlights:
We have had our monthly programs like the OWLs (i.e. Harry Potter book trivia). To participate, you would read one book each month and then join your House members for a fun trivia competition against the other Houses. You even have the opportunity to submit questions of your own.
We've had Herbology classes (we really do have a greenhouse). In the past, we've grown lettuce, radishes, mint, lavender, onions, garlic, dill, celery, and oregano. We've even made salad dressing to go along with some of our delicious veggies.
Dumbeldore's Army would meet monthly for a Harry Potter book themed craft. We've made Sorcerer's Stones, a miniature Goblet of Fire, Peruvian Instant Darkness Powder, Remembralls, and Prophecies. Oh, and remember when Ron tried to turn his rat into a water goblet? We made that too.
We've also offered special programs throughout the year. The Santa Fe Zoo has kindly presented a wonderfully magical program - Fantastic Beasts and How to Care for Them - each year. Live animals are always fun and we've been lucky to have wildlife ambassadors from Sunrise Wildlife Rehabilitation here. They bring several different types of Owls. You learn all about these amazing animals and you could even get up close. Can you think of a better animal to have for a Harry Potter program? We had Capoeira instructors from Apex Martial Arts here to teach this Brazilian Martial Arts - aka self-defense, for Defense Against the Dark Arts. Thanks to Hands-On-Gainesville and UF Chem Outreach, we've been able to offer a wonderfully magical Potions class every year!
We've even had some FoodieSpace programs where you can learn to make Butterbeer, Chocolate Frogs (box included), and Golden Snitch Marshmallows. SewingSpace programs are always fun. We've made Dobby, Pygmy Puffs, and Patronus Ornaments in years past.
These are only a few of the programs that we've offered in the past. The full list of MSWW programs for Year 4 is still in progress. And, as we've mentioned, it will begin virtually. We know it will be different, but we also know that it will be another magical year at MSWW.
Previous House Cup winners:
Year 1: Hufflepuff
Year 2: Ravenclaw
Year 3: Gryffindor
Will we have a repeat winner this year, or will Slytherin reign victorious?
