Alachua County Library District celebrates its Friends of the Library during National Friends of the Libraries Week: October 19-25, 2014. The Library District thanks Friends of the Library, an all-volunteer organization, for 60 years of service and significant contributions to the community.

Since 1986, when the Library District became an independent special taxing district, the Friends have donated more than $4.4 million dollars to the Library District. These funds help provide children’s programming, enrich and expand the Library District’s collection, fund educational scholarships for library staff, purchase books for the Snuggle Up ‘N Read Program, provide materials and training for literacy projects, purchase land for expansion projects and much more.

Thanks to our Friends, the Library District is able to bring bestselling author Eric Litwin to Headquarters Library on October 23, for two interactive music and literacy programs at 1:30 and 7 p.m. Each year the Friends of the Library sponsors the Library’s Snuggle Up program by providing students of the local Head Start Programs with a book they can call their own. For the past two years those books have been Pete the Cat titles authored by Litwin. Families that received his Snuggle Up books, are invited to bring them in for an autograph.

The public is invited to visit any library to learn how to become involved with the Friends of the Library or visit the annual fall Friends of the Library Book Sale, October 25-29, at the BookHouse, 430-B N. Main Street. The book sales are a major source of funding for the Friends.

The Alachua, High Springs and Micanopy branches also have Friends of the Library organizations actively involved with their libraries. These FOL groups have all contributed to enhance library services in their communities.
