Law in the Library: Top 10 Things You Need to Know for Preparing This Year’s Tax Return

The Alachua County Library District is partnering with the Eighth Judicial Circuit Bar Association to present Law in the Library: Top 10 Things You Need to Know for Preparing This Year’s Tax Return at on January 13, 6 p.m. at the Headquarters, 401 E. University Avenue, Gainesville. Volunteer Income Tax Assessment (VITA) representative Joshua Giancarlo will discuss current tax laws and provide updates. Registration is not required.

During Law in the Library presentations experienced attorneys and professionals share their knowledge on a variety of pertinent legal issues and library staff help inform the public about the legal resources available to the public in the John A.H. Murphree Law Library. This Law Library, located at Headquarters, includes the Florida Bar Journal (2009 to present), Florida Cases, Florida Law Weekly, the Florida Statutes plus the Nolo’s small business essentials series and the WestLawNext (only available at Headquarters) and Gale Legal Forms databases.

February 3, 6 p.m., Headquarters: Criminal Law 101 from the Public Defender's Perspective presented by Stacy A. Scott, Public Defender for the Eighth Judicial Circuit

February 6, 5:30 p.m., Headquarters: Restoration of Civil Rights Workshop - attorneys from Josiah T. Walls Bar Association and law students from the University of Florida Levin College will provide one-on-one assistance to persons who have been convicted of a felony and are interested in applying to have their civil rights restored.  If civil rights are restored an applicant will have the right to vote, sit on a jury and hold public office.

March 10, 6 p.m., Headquarters: What Small Businesses and Entrepreneurs Should Know to Operative Real Live Businesses - A. Phil Kabler, Esq. will discuss the basic issues to help entrepreneurs form their businesses. Should I be a sole entrepreneur or create a corporation, an LLC, or something else?  What do I have to do to set up my company?  What do I need to know and do once I start my business about compliance, contracts, employees, loans, real estate and other topics?

March 13, 5 p.m., Library Partnership, 1130 NE 16 Avenue, Gainesville: Restoration of Civil Rights - One-on-one application assistance is provided for persons who would like to restore their civil rights, which include the right to vote, hold public office and sit on a jury. Volunteers will assist applicants with understanding the process for restoring civil rights and provide guidance on the steps necessary to submit an application to the Office of Executive Clemency.

April 14, 6 p.m., Headquarters: An A to Z Guide on Florida's "No Fault" Insurance Law - A. Daniel Vazquez, Esq., an experienced trial attorney who handles personal injury and wrongful death cases, will simplify the complicated automobile insurance system. Personal Injury Protection (PIP) benefits are at the core of Florida's "No Fault" system.  PIP benefits are intended to pay for medical bills, wage loss and mileage reimbursement if a person is injured due to a motor vehicle crash regardless of who is at-fault for the collision. Learn how recent legislative changes to Florida's PIP law affect every driver on Florida's roadways.
