I cannot even count how many teens have told me how much they love this series. Some of the book club kids had already read it, and were still excited to read it again with their book club friends. While I have been trying to select books that are more substantive, and less fantastical, I knew I had some non-fiction and some pretty heavy historical fiction titles coming, so I decided we should read this in the interim. While a bit on the violent side (the main character, after all, is an assassin), it is clearly intended for younger teens. I was astonished to see that the SEVENTH book in this series was selected by Goodreads as one of the best YA titles of 2018, so clearly the series stands the test of time. I assume as the series progresses, there is more magic and fantasy, but in the first book, the protagonist must survive with brute force, as she battles her way against men who are much bigger and stronger than she is. Light on the romance, with a good message of strength and independence for girls. I am happy to have this title in my arsenal to recommend to other teens. We have tons of copies of this, so it is a great book club title for teens and tweens.
