Stay at Home: Teen Drama Club

Girl on Stage

It felt like Teen Drama Club at Hawthorne just got started and was put on hold. Feel free to reminisce on our YouTube channel before you get started on Stay at Home: Teen Drama Club. Lucky for us, the world of artists has been stepping to help fill the gap. This post will show you how to watch some broadway shows online and some tips on how to make your own movie at home.

BroadwayHD is offering free week-long trials of their streaming service. Register for an account for the trial to watch hits like The Sound of Music, Les Miserables, and Fame: The Musical. The trial only lasts for a week, so make the most of it!

Andrew Lloyd Weber's The Shows Must Go On!  shares a classic of his for 48 hours every Friday (through May 15th) for free on YouTube. This week is the classic Cats. This is the play that inspired the recent movie with Taylor Swift, don't miss a chance to see it at home! You can also explore his website to watch clips and learn more about his shows, including Phantom of the Opera.

The Metropolitan Opera  is streaming a free performance each night. Streaming videos are released at 7:30 p.m. EST and are available for 23 hours, until 6:30 p.m. the next day. At the time of this writing tomorrow, May 13th, The Tempest will be available to watch!

The United Kingdom's National Theatre  is releasing free, full-length plays every Thursday on their YouTube channel.

Shakespeare's Globe Theatre is also releasing free recordings on their YouTube channel. Macbeth is currently available for 24 hours. There is a new release every week and films are available for two weeks.

Finally, after you've watched all the films you'd like, it's time to start your own movie! The following instructions go through how to download the free for iOS and Android app Stop Motion Studio. This is the same app that we've been using on the iPads at Teen Drama Club.

stop motion studio app logoStop Motion Studio is a free app. It can be found in the Apple App Store or in Google Play.  It is light blue with a movie camera in the center. If you need some refreshing after being gone so long or are just starting out, the creators have designed some wonderful, comprehensive guides for iOS and Android.  Some of the options will be unavailable in the free version, but the options will be there.

To make your movie, remember what we talked about at Teen Drama Club. There is no right way or wrong way. The only limit to your movie is your imagination. So, get creating!

If you'd like, please feel welcome to share your movies with us at cevans@aclib.us to post to our Hawthorne Teen Drama Club page. Be sure to check our blogs for more from Teen Drama Club!
