Tina Bushnell receives 2014 Carol Combs Hole Award

October 17, 2014

The Alachua County Library District (ACLD) awarded the 2014 Carol Combs Hole Award to Tina Bushnell, Librarian in Youth Services at Headquarters Library. Each year ACLD honors the memory of Carol Combs Hole by recognizing an employee or group for an outstanding project that exemplifies “thinking outside the book” to broaden, enhance, improve or promote library services and community outreach.

The Carol Hole Award for Exceptional Outreach to the Community honors the memory of former Community Services Coordinator Carol Hole who during her 32 years with the District enhanced outreach services and received five national and state awards for her work in the development of innovative bookmobile services.

This year’s recipient, Tina Bushnell, is being honored for her work in bringing the library to new users in the community. Bushnell reached out to people both online and face to face. She created a successful partnership between ACLD and Gainesville Equality Youth (GEY), ensuring that GEY would meet its goal of “providing a safe and supportive space for the physical, emotional and social well-being of LGBTQ youth.” She served as a mentor, invited speakers and planned events for the group. She created a new program with the Harn Museum called Preschool Art Time at the Library. She was instrumental in starting the Job Corp Book Club at Headquarters. She leads teen book club meetings at Headquarters and created a Goodreads Book Club page for the group. She trained foster grandparents in early literacy. She regularly updates the Kids and Teen pages of ACLD’s website as well as the Sunshine State Young Readers Awards Program, Florida Teens Read, New Picture Books and Teen Nominee book lists. She participates in Ask A Librarian, reaching more library users who otherwise might not be able to use their library. She is serving on the 2015 Comic Con task force and coached a Battle of the Books team.

This year’s committee included Beth Allerton/Micanopy Branch, Sheila Bishop/Millhopper Branch, Pat Griggs/Adult Services at Headquarters Library, John Jack/eBranch, Rachelle Mason/Technical Services, Suzanne Richardson/Newberry Branch, Kelley Stewart/Automated Services and Chair Chris Culp/Public Services Division Director.
