Tower Road Branch expansion and renovation starts in January

December 19, 2016

In January 2017, the Alachua County Library District will begin the expansion and renovation of its Tower Road Branch at 3020 SW 75 Street. The expansion will add 8,500 sq. ft. to the existing 15,000 sq. ft. space to provide library services and opportunities for Alachua County residents in this fast-growing Southwest area. Additions and improvements will include a larger meeting room for library and community events, an expanded children’s indoor area and an outdoor fenced area for stories and programs, a dedicated space for teens, a quiet reading room for traditional library users, three study rooms and new restrooms.

“Expanding this location is important because this branch serves our third largest population area that includes the broadest range of demographics with diverse economic and educational backgrounds,” said Library Director Shaney T. Livingston. “We are committed to bringing more opportunities to the Southwest neighborhoods we serve including Haile Plantation, Kanapaha, Tioga and Oaks Mall areas as well as the SWAG Family Resource Center. Our Library District and Tower Road Branch staff have worked together with architects and planners to design this new library space to function efficiency while providing opportunities to improve lives through education, offer a safe place for families and improve our community.”

Construction planning started about 10 months ago. In addition to library staff, the expansion/remodeling crew includes architect McKellips Associates Inc. Architecture, general contractor NuJak Development, mechanical engineer Campbell Spellicy Engineering, structural engineer Wayland Structural Engineering and civil engineer EDA Engineers/Surveyors/Planners Inc.

The Library District received a $500,000 public library construction grant from the Division of Library and Information Services, Florida Department of the State. The Alachua County Library District Foundation will make a donation for the Snuggle Up Center and the Teen Space and the Friends of the Library will make a donation toward the Quiet Reading room. The total budget for the expansion/renovation including upgraded furnishings is $2.75 million and is scheduled to be completed by the end of 2017. In order to continue providing services during construction, the Tower Road Branch will utilize 3,900 sq. ft. of mobile space in a temporary building.
