Alachua County fifth grade students were honored at the annual Kiwanis Club of the University City Citizen of Year Ceremony on May 11, at 11 a.m. at the Alachua County Library District Headquarters. Students were selected from the Citizen of the Month program that recognizes a fifth grader at each of Alachua County's public elementary schools each month for their achievements both in the classroom and within their communities.
Sheila Crapo, President of the University City Kiwanis Club, welcomed a room full of special guests including speakers, students, parents, teachers, principals and other family members. After the opening prayer by Evan Pitts, Past President of the University City Kiwanis Club, words of encouragement were shared from Shaney T. Livingston, Director, Alachua County Library District; Dr. Owen Roberts, Superintendent, Alachua County Public Schools. Alachua County Board of County Commission Lee Pinkoson delivered the keynote speech. Jennifer Taylor, Supervisor of Student Support Services, Alachua County Public Schools, presented the awards - a certificate, Best Buy gift card and a free Gator Domino's pizza. Each Citizen of the Year shook hands with all the speakers then received his or her gift. Photos were taken of the students that the Library District will be make into keepsake bookmarks and pictures for the students.
