Ten years ago, Dash and Lily's Book of Dares hit the shelves. Dash is snarly, moody, and very sarcastic. Lily is cheerful, kind, and bursting with Christmas cheer. On a whim, Lily's brother, Langston, and Langston's boyfriend concot a plan to help Lily have some excitement over winter break: a red notebook with clues placed at the Strand, a famous New York City bookstore. What follows is an adventure that includes nearly every member of Lily's family and Dash's friends, a Macy's Santa, a surly bookstore attendant, and a group of Washington Square moms. How it ends will leave Lily and Dash changed forever. Will they ever meet? Or are they destined to be penpals forever?

So, how does the Netflix series compare? The TV series takes a little liberty in some of the plot lines; however, the adventurous spirit of Dash and Lily's Book of Dares is there. You'll see some parts that happen sooner than others, and some scenes are combined in ways that the book did not have. Watching Dash and Lily grow together onscreen is still just as charming, but I recommend reading the book from your library if you'd like to spend more time with them. You can find each title at the following links: Dash and Lily's Book of Dares, The Twelve Days of Dash and Lily, and Mind the Gap.
