The Snail and the Whale by Julia Donaldson

Julia Donaldson's The Snail and the Whale is a thrilling travel adventure of two devoted, but unlikely, friends. The illustrations by Axel Scheffler are vibrant and intriguing.

Snail and Whale's travels take them to see penguins on icebergs, volcanoes erupting in the tropics, sharks swimming over coral reefs, parrots singing in palm trees and lightening crashing over sea cliffs. Along the way, they even make friends with some school children and a helpful group of firemen.

So how does Snail become a hero, take an urgent message to a school room, and end up saving the life of his biggest, best friend? What is the delightful and heartwarming ending of their adventure? To find out, you will have to read this amazing story which is told in lyrical rhyme.

     "This is the sea.

     So wild and free.

     That carried the whale

And the snail on his tail

To towering icebergs and far-off lands,

With fiery mountains and golden sands."

This lovely picture book can be shared with both preschoolers and elementary aged children.
