A star has gone out in the community of physicists and astronomers as Stephen Hawking passed away on Wednesday, March 14, 2018 after a career spanning fifty years. Hawking is perhaps best known for his realization that black holes, contrary to the then prevailing understanding, should actually emit radiation and, therefore, slowly give up their mass. These emissions are known as Hawking radiation in his honor. He was the author of numerous popular treatments of science, notably "A Brief History of Time," and, jointly with his daughter Lucy, three children's books intended to introduce young readers to significant ideas in science.
