[Why did you go to the library that day?]

I ran out of DVDs, and I had some questions that I wanted to ask Joseph or Tricia.

[I’ve heard you ask a lot of questions.]

Yeah. I’m writing a mystery novel, and I want it to be as accurate as possible. That way they won’t reject my request to buy copies for the library again. It’s my third book, but they haven’t bought any of my others.

[Are you upset about that?]

A little, but I get it, man. Centreville doesn’t budget a lot for the library, and I’m self published. I need to get picked up by a big publisher to really have a shot.

[What did you do at the library?]

Tricia was dealing with her party, but Joseph was at the front desk. So I talked with him, asked a couple questions. We were interrupted a few times as people started to leave the party… he had to check out their books for them. But he had time to talk once they had left. Ms. Dorsey came up and complained. She’s always complaining. When she left, Joseph went to go check the reading room.

[Where did you go when he left?]

Well, I followed him. He doesn't mind usually, and I like helping. So we tidied up the reading room together.

[How long were you in there for?]

Just a few minutes.

[Did you see anyone else that evening?]

Yeah—Leroy. He does a lot of the shelving for the library. I tried to get the job when the last guy retired, but they picked Leroy over me.

[That sounds frustrating.]

I mean, yeah. But I don’t need the money right now. It was just a way to pass the time. Leroy’s a nice dude, though he gets angry pretty easily.

[Did you leave after helping Joseph Spencer tidy the reading room?]

Nah. Joseph went back to the front desk, so I asked him a couple more questions, but he had to go finish closing the building. I don’t know why Anya doesn’t help him more… all she does all day is sit there and read magazines.

[So where were you when the police arrived?]

I was at the front desk still, waiting for Joseph to get back. I was the one that called 911 actually. He came running out of the bookshelves and there was blood all over his hands. It was freaky.

[Quiet for several seconds.]

I’m not sure I want to finish my novel anymore, now that I think about it.

[[End recording.]]
