"I came upon a child of God
He was walking along the road
And I asked him where are you going
And this he told me
I'm going on down to Yasgur's farm *
I'm going to join in a rock 'n' roll band
I'm going to camp out on the land
I'm going to try an' get my soul free"
Joni Mitchell, 1969
It was the summer in August 1969. We had just landed on the moon, the Vietnam war was in full swing, and American youth were feeling feisty. I was a child when Woodstock occurred. It was years later when I started listening to the music made famous at a dairy farm in New York State.
I have since listened to Joni Mitchells’ song hundreds of times, as well as the music of Crosby Stills Nash , Richie Havens, Melanie, Arlo Guthrie, Joan Baez, Santana, Grateful Dead, Credence, Sly, Jefferson Airplane, Joe Cocker, Country Joe...and the beat goes on.
The spirit of Woodstock lives on in High Springs. The library is hosting an event with a display, and a music and trivia event on Aug. 10, 2019, from 12 - 1:30 p.m.
The High Springs Lions Club is hosting a Woodstock Revisited nonprofit event on Aug. 16-18 with bands playing music made popular during Woodstock. The proceeds from the event are being used to benefit local charities.
