National Adopt A Shelter Pet Day - April 30th

Blog Header that reads "National Adopt A Shelter Pet Day"

Did you know that April 30th is National Adopt A Shelter Pet Day? Well, it is!

Each year National Adopt A Shelter Pet Day raises awareness for Animal Shelters and Animal Rescues that work with companion animals (pets).

Each year, approximately 6.5 million companion animals enter animal shelters nationwide.

This means that shelters and rescues are always looking for help! You can help shelters and rescues by donating money, pet food, or pet supplies or by volunteering your time to help walk, clean, and care for all those furry friends. However, one of the best ways to support the important work of Animal Shelter and Rescues is by encouraging people looking for new pets to adopt not shop.

Approximately 3.2 million shelter animals are adopted each year (1.6 million dogs and 1.6 million cats).

When you adopt a pet from an animal shelter or animal rescue, not only do you get a brand new friend, but you also help the shelter or rescue by providing the funds and space that allows them to save even more animals from dangerous and lonely lives without a home.

At the library you can find lots of stories all about pets from Animal Shelters and Animal Rescues. Some are just fun stories, but others can help you learn a lot. Check out the lists below:

Just about eleven years ago, I adopted my dog from an animal shelter. She was just a puppy then but now she's grown so much and she's my very best friend. Her name is Lexi (or Gremlin or Nugget or Pumpkin) and she's a Border Collie Mix! She loves car rides, dressing up, playing frisbee, and although her favorite food is chicken, she'll steal your pizza given the chance!

Think you and your family are ready to welcome a pet into your home? Want to donate funds/supplies or volunteer your time to a great cause? Make sure to check out some of our great local animal shelters and rescues:
