Create Con! Wrap-up

The first annual Create Con! was an invention and creativity competition spanning three counties: Putnam, Alachua, and Levy (PAL). Local competitions were held during Teen Tech Week--Create it @ Your Library (March 7- 12) and culminated in a Final Competition and Showcase on Saturday, March 12, @ Headquarters Library. First Place Winners from each county competed for a Grand Prize.

Alachua County judges Joyce West and Mike Lemire filled out the judging rubric and delibertated to come up with our county winners. The winners used metal, wood, digital photography, paint and canvas, and recyclable materials in their projects

1st Place: Roger Nicholson, for "The "Industructable" Longboard"

2nd Place": Raphael Dogo, for "Bicycle Kick"

3rd Place: "The Last Elephant," by Kiley Joyner

Honorable Mention: "Woman," by Miley Zou

Roger Nicholson placed 1st in Alachua and 2nd in the tri-county competition. Roger is an 18 year old Gainesville High School student and currently an intern at the Headquarters Branch Library.

Roger received a Kindle and an Amazon gift card courtesy of PAL.

Roger said, about his winning skateboard: "This board is not the first metal board built specifically for durability. My friend and I designed and built this board ourselves with a cutting torch, two angle grinders, and a MIG welder. Most other metal boards have aluminum bodies and, while better than a wooden board, warp over time. This board is made of steel, which makes it fairly heavy, but it will not suddenly break while riding at high speeds."

Roger's winning longboard, which is displayed with his friend's broken wooden longboard, can be viewed in the Teen Space @ Headquarters through the end of March.

Makerspace materials, like Snap Circits, littleBits, 3D printers, Circuit Scribe pens and Duplo Legos, were available from the three counties for teens to learn and create.

Congratulations to all of the talented teen artists and inventors. Thanks to their families and friends who came out to cheer them on. Alachua County Library District Youth Services was thrilled to host this event with our partner libraries, Putnam and Levy. Check out the slideshow below! (Photos by Gail Carr)
