DVD Collection Highlight: Creature Features

If you adore the "Creature Feature" Horror sub-genre as I do, you'll want make sure you've seen these modern titles.

Arachnophobia (1990, PG-13)

A doctor who is deathly afraid of spiders moves his family to a small town where the disgusting arachnids are attacking the townspeople. He must overcome his fear to save the community, but it may already be too late!

Black Sheep (1990, PG-13)

An experiment in genetic engineering turns harmless sheep into blood-thirsty killers that terrorize a sprawling New Zealand farm.

 

Dark Was the Night (2015, NR) 

Maiden Woods is a remote and quiet town of decent hard-working people, but something is stirring in the dark woods surrounding this isolated community. After a logging company decimates an area of the forest, a rash of increasingly violent and unexplainable events transpires. Sheriff Paul Shields and his deputy, struggle to confront their own personal demons while facing down a new breed of raw terror that is possibly older than humanity itself, and much, much hungrier.

The Descent (2006, R)

On an annual extreme outdoor adventure, six women friends meet in a remote part of the Appalachians to explore a cave hidden deep int thewoods. Far below the surface of the earth, disaster strikes when a rock fall blocks their exit and there is no way out. The women push on, praying for another exit, but there is something else lurking under the earth. Thefriends are now prey, forced to unleash their most primal instincts in an all-out war against an unspeakable horror that attacks without warning.

 

Grabbers (2013, NR)

On Erin Island, an idyllic fishing village off the coast of Ireland, charming inebriate Ciaran O'Shea is tasked with showing police officer Lisa Nolan her new beat. But strange doings are aloof. The crew of a fishing boat disappears, whales start appearing dead on the shore, and a local lobsterman catches a mysterious tentacled creature in his trap. Soon it becomes clear to O'Shea and Nolan that there's something unnatural out there, and it's hungry.

 

The Host/Gwoemul (2007, R)

In Seoul, an American army doctor forces his assistant to dump bottle after bottle of formaldehyde into the drain. The drain runs into the Han River,the major river running through the middle of Seoul. His only reason is that the bottles are covered with a layer of dust. Six years later, a food cart operator, Gang-du falls asleep every time his dad, Hie-bong, is away from the stand for more than a few minutes. Soon, his daughter, Hyun-Seo returns from school. Then a monster appears in the river and starts to attack the people lounging at its banks. Gang-du and Hyun-Seo are chased by the beast. Hie-bong tries valiantly to save his daughter, but thebeast soon captures her and drags her away. They receive a call from thedaughter's cell phone and try to rescue her from the large monster.

 

Jeepers Creepers (2002, R)

Alone on a desolate highway, two homebound teens are nearly run off the road by a dementd tailgater. Later they spot this maniac disposing a body down into a sewer pipe. When they stop to investigate, they realize the horrible mistake they have made. The unspeakable evil maniac now intends to make them his next victims.

 

Mimic (1998, R)

A team of scientists discover a miracle cure that stops the spread of a deadly disease...only to find three years later that something has gone terribly wrong! Their creation has taken on a horrifying life of its own...able to mimic and destroy its every predator - even man! And now, it threatens to wipe out an entire city...unless they stop it in time.

 

Ragnarok (2014, PG-13)

Convinced the Viking ship Oseberg contains the answer to the mystery ofRagnarok, the end of days in Norse mythology, an expedition group sets out to follow the ship's treasure map and discovers a secret more terrifying than they could possibly imagine.

 

Slither (2006, R)

Wheelsy is a small rural town where not much happens, but that is all going to change, and not for the better. Grant Grant, the town's wealthiest and most powerful citizen, is taking a walk through the woods when he comes across a strange and unfamiliar life form. Grant makes the mistake of getting too close and soon an alien creature invades his body. It is not long before Grant isn't the only one who has been attacked by the strange and slimy things. Grant's wife, Starla, begins to notice that something is very wrong with her husband. At the same time, Sheriff Bill Pardy becomes aware that there is a pattern of missing people and animals. Together, Starla and Bill set out to put a stop to the alien invaders intent upon taking over Wheelsy.

Two country handymen and a seismology student discover a desolate town infested with gigantic man-eating creatures that live underground.

 

Troll Hunter/Trolljegeren (2011, PG-13)

A group of students investigates a series of mysterious bear killings, but learns that there are much more dangerous things going on. They start to follow a mysterious hunter, learning that he is actually a troll hunter.

 

Zombeavers (2015, R)

They're ferocious, they're furry, they're Zombeavers, the stars of this 2015 horror-comedy. When a trio of sexy college girls arrive at a remote cabin for a weekend getaway, their vacation is quickly jeopardized by a hungry bear, a menacing hunter, and the girls' own party-crashing boyfriends. However, these preliminary disturbances are nothing compared to what lurks in the lake by the cabin: The result of a local chemical spill, a horde of bloodthirsty, zombified beavers closes in.
