I’m Jennifer at the Headquarters Library and I recommend But I’m a Cheerleader because it’s about finding love in unusual circumstances and being true to yourself. Starring Natasha Lyonne, Clea DuVall, and RuPaul, this is a satirical look at what happens when the all-American girl shows signs of “deviant tendencies.” Although Megan is a cheerleader, she hates kissing her boyfriend, is a vegetarian, and has a Melissa Etheridge poster in her room (the horror). Her parents send her to True Directions, a conversion therapy camp. While at camp, Megan meets Graham. As Megan comes to terms with her sexuality, she and Graham form a bond and fall in love. The hard part is convincing Graham to be true to herself as well.

Hi, I’m Fiona at Library Headquarters, and the most Romantic movie of all time is Casablanca starring Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman. The story takes place in 1942 Casablanca, Morocco, where Rick, the owner of Rick’s Café Americain, sees Ilsa, his lost love. But she is with her husband, Victor. And now, Victor needs the letters of transit that Rick has in order to outrun the Germans. Ilsa still loves Rick. But as Victor boards the plane, Rick insists that Ilsa go too. For classic romance Casablanca.
Disobedience

Assh here with my favorite romance Disobedience based off the book by Naomi Alderman. When Ronit’s rabbi father dies back in London she must return to the Orthodox community that shunned her. She reconnects with her childhood love Esti who is married to the new rabbi Dovid and over time they begin to reconnect and confront issues such as community, spirituality, and free will. It’s a beautiful romance that touches the heart and I felt particularly moved by it. I hope you enjoy it.

Como agua para chocolate (Like Water for Chocolate) is one of my favorite foreign films. Set in the early 1900s, this Mexican film is based on the novel of the same name. The film follows Tita, the youngest of three daughters in the de la Garza family, as she navigates love, tradition, and duty. Tita, who has a unique talent for cooking, is expected to not marry and instead care for her parents as they age. However, Tita has fallen in love with Pedro. This film is a feast filled with sensuality.

Hello, I’m Sheila the Literacy Coordinator for the Library District. If you like BBC period pieces and slightly sad, second chance romances, then this 1995 adaptation of Jane Austen’s Persuasion may be your cup of tea. To get to their happy ending, Anne Elliott and Captain Frederick Wentworth must balance the needs of their hearts with their obligations to their families. A somewhat mournful story is lighted by sly satire.

While this segment is about Romance, I’ve chosen to talk to you about a love story. This movie is full of all sorts of love – romantic love, love shared between friends, a son for his father, the love between a grandfather and his grandson and True Love. You may have guessed it already. That film is Princess Bride and is based on the novel of the same name by William Goldman.
