Gainesville, Fla. The Alachua County Library District now offers Northstar Digital Literacy, an online learning program to build and test basic computer skills. Patrons can use Northstar Digital Literacy at any library branch or home at www.aclib.us/northstar

“We are proud to offer this tool to help patrons of all ages learn basic computer skills. Patrons can learn everything from how to use a mouse to using social media,” says Public Services Division Director Joyce West.

Patrons can practice skills, then take assessments to earn certificates. These certificates provide proof of proficient computer skills, an important credential for employment.

Northstar explains basic skills needed to perform tasks on computers and online in simple, self-guided lessons. Topics include:

  • Essential Computer Skills: Basic computer skills, internet basics, email, Windows OS, Mac OS.
  • Essential Software Skills: Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Google Docs.
  • Using Technology in Daily Life: Social media, information literacy, career search skills, supporting K-12 distance learning, your digital footprint.

The new resource was paid for by a generous donation in honor of former Alachua County Sheriff and State Senator Stephen Oelrich to support the community in improving digital literacy and job-seeking skills.
