Refreshing the STEM Kit Collection

Contact: Brad McClenny

The Alachua County Library District is refreshing our STEM Kits and adding STEM Kits Jr. for our younger patrons.

STEM Kits were introduced to the Library District in 2021. These kits are designed to encourage scientific discovery in patrons, pre-school through 5th grade. The collection will now have STEM Kits for children aged 8 and older and STEM Kits Jr. for children aged 5 and older. Each kit includes a hands-on exploration item, like a themed game or science toy, along with a themed book and/or DVD. STEM Kits are part of our Library of Things and can be checked out for 14 days.

Some examples of the new STEM Kits are Prism and Light, Money Math, and Flight. Some examples of the STEM Kits Jr. are Counting, Life Cycles, and Time.

STEM Kits inspire playful exploration, which can build a child’s confidence, motivation, and knowledge of science. STEM Kits are a great resource for children in pre-school through 5th grade and can be an excellent support for homeschool or virtual learning.

The original STEM Kits were made available thanks to the generous support of the Rotary Club of Gainesville. The update to the STEM Kits and addition of the STEM Kits Jr. were made available thanks to the generous support from the Alachua County Friends of the Library.
